What should you know about drug for nausea in pregnancy?

Nausea and vomiting are common in pregnancy, but severity varies. Treatment depends on how often you vomit, whether you can keep fluids down, your stage of pregnancy, other conditions and any medicines already taken. A clinician may recommend dietary measures first or prescribe an anti-sickness medicine considered suitable for your circumstances.

Nausea can also have another cause. Diarrhoea or stomach cramps may suggest Gastroenteritis or Food Poisoning; burning behind the breastbone may fit Acid Reflux. These clues help determine the right assessment rather than the right medicine alone.

Take small, frequent sips of fluid and try plain foods in small portions when you can tolerate them. Avoid smells or foods that reliably trigger symptoms, and rest. Before using a prescription, pharmacy product, supplement or herbal remedy, check it with your maternity team or pharmacist.

Take any prescribed anti-sickness medicine exactly as directed and report troublesome effects. Keep a note of fluids, meals, vomiting episodes and urine output; this gives the clinician useful information about hydration.

Contact your maternity team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little or dark urine, feel faint, have severe abdominal pain, vomit blood, or are losing weight. Seek urgent help for confusion, collapse, severe weakness or signs of dehydration. Persistent vomiting can require assessment and fluid replacement.

Ask which options are suitable at your stage of pregnancy, how to take them, what side effects to watch for, and when vomiting needs an urgent review. Mention all medicines, supplements and previous pregnancy reactions.
