What should you know about drug for allergy skin?

A clinician first checks whether the skin problem is likely to be allergic and whether a medicine, food, bite or contact exposure could be involved. Hives often cause raised, itchy patches that move around, while eczema-like irritation may remain in one area. Infection and other rashes can look similar.

Treatment may involve avoiding the suspected trigger, a suitable antihistamine for itch or hives, or a prescribed cream for selected inflammatory rashes. The right product depends on age, pregnancy, other medicines and medical conditions.

Tell a pharmacist or doctor every product you take, including cold remedies, herbal products and creams. Follow the label or prescription directions and avoid combining products with the same ingredient. Do not use someone else’s medicine or apply a strong steroid cream to an undiagnosed rash.

Arrange a GP Consultation if the rash is spreading, keeps returning, follows a new medicine or is not settling. Allergy Testing is useful only in selected situations and should be guided by the clinical history.

Get emergency help for swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, faintness or rapidly worsening hives. These symptoms may indicate Anaphylaxis. Seek urgent medical assessment for blistering, peeling skin, painful rash, fever, or sores affecting the mouth or eyes.

Ask what trigger is most likely, which treatment is suitable for you, how long to use it, and which symptoms mean you should stop it. Ask how to document the suspected allergy and whether testing or specialist review is appropriate.
