What should you know about a fingertip pulse oximeter?

The clip uses light to estimate oxygen saturation and detect a pulse. It does not diagnose the cause of breathlessness, chest discomfort, infection, or a change in consciousness. Cold fingers, movement, nail products, poor circulation, an incorrectly fitted clip, and an irregular pulse can make a reading less dependable. Skin pigmentation and device quality can also affect interpretation, so a single number should not override how you feel.

Sit quietly, warm your hand, remove nail polish if practical, and place the device on a clean finger according to its instructions. Keep still while the display settles and note the pulse alongside the oxygen estimate. Repeat after repositioning if the result seems unexpected.
