What should you know about DRE for prostate cancer?

During a DRE, you usually lie on your side or bend forward while the clinician wears a glove and uses lubricant. A finger is gently placed in the rectum to feel the accessible surface of the prostate. The clinician assesses whether it feels enlarged, hard, irregular, or tender. A change can have several explanations, including benign enlargement, inflammation, or cancer. The examination does not reach every part of the prostate and cannot show the whole gland. Findings are considered with symptoms, a PSA blood test, medical history, and sometimes imaging or biopsy.

Tell the clinician about urinary symptoms, previous prostate tests, medicines, and any pain or bleeding. Relaxing the pelvic muscles can make the examination easier; ask for an explanation before each step and tell the clinician if you need a pause. If the prostate feels unusual, the next step may be repeat assessment, blood testing, imaging, or biopsy. Treatment decisions depend on the complete assessment. Options for confirmed prostate cancer can include active monitoring, surgery, radiotherapy, or other treatments suited to the disease and your health.

Arrange medical review for persistent difficulty passing urine, blood in urine or semen, pelvic pain, or a change in urinary flow. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower abdominal pain, develop fever with urinary symptoms, or feel faint. These symptoms require assessment because urinary blockage or infection can need prompt treatment; they do not by themselves establish cancer.
