What should you know about draining paronychia at home?

Paronychia is inflammation or infection of the skin beside or beneath a fingernail or toenail. The fold may be red, swollen, tender, and sometimes filled with pus. It can follow a torn cuticle, nail biting, manicure trauma, or repeated wet exposure. Long-lasting cases may involve irritation or a skin yeast infection rather than a pocket that should be opened.

Soak the affected digit in comfortably warm water, then dry it carefully and keep it clean. Protect it from biting, picking, harsh cleaners, and prolonged moisture. Do not pierce the nail fold, cut the cuticle, or squeeze out pus. Remove rings if swelling is developing. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are not easing, if pus is clearly trapped, or if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity; treatment may include antibiotics or supervised drainage.

Seek same-day care for spreading redness, worsening throbbing pain, increasing swelling, fever, red streaks, or difficulty bending the finger. Urgent assessment is also needed if pain reaches the fingertip pad, the nail is lifting, or you feel unwell. These signs can indicate infection extending beyond the nail fold and are not suitable for home drainage.

Ask whether there is an abscess, whether drainage is needed, which medicine is appropriate, how to protect the nail, and whether repeated episodes point to moisture or cuticle irritation.
