What should you know about dot rash on arm?

Small red or skin-coloured dots may arise around hair follicles, after sweating, or where clothing, detergent, plants, or a product has touched the skin. Itching and dry scaling can occur with atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. A ring-shaped, spreading patch can fit ringworm, while intense itch that is worse at night may raise concern for scabies. Thick, sharply defined scaly areas can occur with psoriasis. Heat rash often appears where sweat is trapped, and intertrigo affects warm, rubbing skin folds. A new medicine can also trigger a drug rash.

The word dot does not identify the cause by itself. Note whether the spots blanch when pressed, feel raised, form blisters or crusts, and whether they are spreading. Take a clear photograph in good light so a clinician can compare changes.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a plain moisturiser if the skin is dry. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, new topical remedies, and tight sleeves until the pattern is clearer. Keep the area cool and dry, and wash clothing that may carry a new detergent or plant residue. Do not share towels if the rash is circular, crusted, or spreading. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment after checking the rash and reviewing medicines.

Get urgent medical help if the rash comes with trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, faintness, rapidly spreading swelling, severe pain, or skin peeling. Seek prompt assessment for purple or dark red dots that do not fade when pressed, fever, marked warmth, pus, red streaks, or a rash near the eyes. Arrange a dermatology review if it persists, keeps returning, spreads, or interferes with sleep.
