Understanding donor embryo treatment outcomes

A clinic may report a positive pregnancy test, an ongoing pregnancy, or a live birth; these describe different points in the process and should not be treated as interchangeable. Ask which outcome a quoted figure represents and whether it is measured per embryo transfer or across a group of treatment cycles.

Donor embryos are embryos created from donated eggs and sperm, then transferred to the recipient's uterus. Their developmental stage, whether they were frozen, the quality information available, and the way they were stored can affect how a clinic discusses them. A transfer can lead to implantation, no implantation, or a pregnancy that ends early; an estimate cannot predict which result will occur for one person.

Your uterine cavity may be assessed before transfer, and the lining may be prepared with medication or a natural-cycle plan. Health conditions, previous pregnancy history, age at the time the embryo was created, and the number of embryos transferred can also shape counselling. Bring any records of fertility treatment, pregnancy history, surgery, long-term conditions, and medicines or supplements.
