Dog skin tag removal at home: what to know

A soft, raised bump may be a skin tag, but appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish it from an inflamed growth, cyst, wart, or tumor. Location matters: a bump near the eye, mouth, paw, collar area, or a constantly rubbed fold may be irritated or easily injured. Scratching and licking can turn a small lesion into an open wound.

Arrange a veterinary examination and take a clear photograph to track changes. Prevent licking or chewing with a properly fitted protective collar if your veterinarian recommends one, and keep grooming tools away from the area. Do not apply human wart products, essential oils, acids, or household antiseptics. A clinic may remove a confirmed skin tag using a method suited to its size, attachment, and location.

Seek prompt veterinary care if the bump bleeds, becomes painful, develops discharge or a bad smell, changes quickly, turns dark, or interferes with walking, eating, seeing, or toileting. A growth that is repeatedly traumatized needs assessment even if it initially looked harmless.

Ask whether the growth needs sampling, which removal method fits its location, how to stop licking afterward, and which wound changes should trigger a recheck.
