What should you know about dog shoulder pain limping?

Shoulder pain may follow a strain, impact, or repetitive activity, but a limp can also begin in the paw, elbow, neck, or nerves. Possible shoulder problems include tendon irritation, a rotator cuff injury, joint inflammation, or arthritis. A dog may carry the head low, shift weight away from one foreleg, hesitate at stairs, or resist being touched. Watching which leg is affected and when the limp appears gives useful information, but it cannot identify the cause on its own.

Arrange a veterinary examination if the limp continues or returns. Until then, keep activity calm and controlled: avoid chasing, jumping, stairs, and rough play, and use a lead for short toilet walks. Check the paw gently for an obvious foreign object without forcing a painful joint. Do not give human pain medicine unless a veterinarian specifically prescribes it. Examination may include the neck, shoulder, elbow, paw, gait, and imaging.

Seek urgent veterinary help if the dog cannot bear weight, has severe or sudden pain, marked swelling, a visible deformity, breathing difficulty, or weakness in more than one limb. Prompt care is also needed if the limp follows a major accident or is paired with fever, unusual tiredness, or loss of appetite.
