Does wound suturing treat cuts and lacerations?

A clinician first checks the wound's depth, location, cleanliness, bleeding, and possible damage to nerves, blood vessels, tendons, or other tissue. Sutures may be suitable when the wound edges can be gently aligned. Some wounds are better managed with adhesive strips, medical glue, or left to heal while being dressed.

Stitches hold separated skin together and can help control bleeding and protect the wound as new tissue forms. The procedure usually involves numbing the area, washing and inspecting the wound, placing stitches, and covering the site. The type of stitch and whether it dissolves depend on the wound and its location.

Sutures close the opening; they do not remove dirt, kill bacteria, repair every injured structure, or prevent all scarring. A clinician may need to clean the wound thoroughly, check vaccination needs, prescribe treatment for infection, or arrange specialist care.

Apply steady pressure with clean gauze or cloth to active bleeding. Do not probe deeply, pull out an embedded object, or pour harsh chemicals into the wound. Once bleeding is controlled, cover the area and arrange prompt medical assessment if the wound is deep, gaping, contaminated, caused by a bite, or continues to bleed.

After suturing, keep the dressing and wound clean and follow the clinician's instructions about bathing, activity, dressing changes, and stitch removal. Avoid picking at scabs or pulling on the thread. Increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or separation of the wound needs medical review.

Seek urgent medical care for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, a wound with visible deep tissue, numbness, loss of movement, a pale or cold body part, or a cut involving the eye, face, hand, joint, or genitals. A wound from a serious accident or one containing glass or metal also needs assessment.

Call emergency services if heavy bleeding is accompanied by faintness, confusion, difficulty breathing, or weakness. Do not delay care because the wound looks small: damage beneath the skin may not be obvious.
