Does wound care and dressing treat animal bite?

Cleaning removes saliva, dirt, and other contamination from the wound. A suitable dressing helps cover the area and absorb fluid while the skin begins to heal. Animal teeth can push bacteria beneath the skin, even when the surface wound looks small. The injury may involve tendons, joints, nerves, or bone, particularly on a hand, foot, face, or near a joint.

Wash your hands, then rinse the wound thoroughly with clean running water and mild soap. Apply gentle pressure with clean material if it is bleeding, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not try to close a deep puncture yourself. Note the animal, the time and place of the bite, and whether it can be safely identified; share this information with a clinician.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for any bite that breaks the skin, especially on the hand, face, or foot, or if bleeding does not stop with pressure. Seek urgent help for spreading redness, increasing swelling, pus, fever, severe pain, numbness, or difficulty moving the area. A clinician can assess antibiotics, tetanus protection, and rabies-related advice based on the animal and circumstances.

Ask whether the wound needs deeper cleaning, closure, antibiotics, or vaccination. Tell the clinician whether the animal was domestic or wild, appeared ill, was available for observation, and whether your tetanus protection is current.
