The Whipple procedure, also called pancreaticoduodenectomy, removes the part of the pancreas containing the tumour along with nearby structures such as the duodenum, gallbladder, and bile duct. The surgeon then reconnects the digestive system so food and digestive juices can pass through. It is mainly considered for tumours in the pancreatic head when scans and specialist review suggest complete removal is feasible.
