Does vulvodynia cause vulval pain?

Vulvodynia is persistent or recurring pain in the vulva. It may feel like burning, stinging, soreness, irritation, or an electric shock. Pain can be present without contact or may be brought on by sitting, clothing, touch, wiping, or sexual activity. The skin may look normal even when the pain is real and disruptive.

Infection, dermatitis, thrush, hormonal dryness, nerve irritation, cysts, and pelvic floor muscle problems can cause similar symptoms. A clinician may ask about timing and triggers, inspect the skin, and test for conditions that need different treatment.

Arrange a GP or gynaecology appointment when pain continues, returns, or affects sleep, movement, sex, or urination. Wear loose breathable clothing, wash with lukewarm water or a gentle unscented product, and avoid douching or fragranced products. Do not keep applying treatments for infection unless a clinician has advised them.

Seek prompt care for a new ulcer, blister, lump, bleeding, unusual discharge, fever, rapidly worsening redness, or pain when passing urine. Urgent assessment is appropriate for severe pain, spreading swelling, or feeling faint or very unwell.
