Does vaginal pessary fitting treat uterine prolapse?

Uterine prolapse occurs when the tissues and muscles holding the uterus become weaker, allowing it to move down towards the vaginal opening. A pessary rests inside the vagina and supports the uterus from below. This may reduce dragging, pressure or a sensation of something coming down, especially when standing or active.

A pessary is a reversible management option. The correct shape and size depend on the vaginal anatomy, the degree of prolapse and whether bladder or bowel symptoms are also present. It should not cause persistent discomfort or prevent normal urination.

Ask for an assessment of the prolapse and any urinary, bowel or sexual symptoms before selecting a device. During fitting, walk, sit and empty your bladder if advised so comfort and support can be checked. Learn the care routine and attend follow-up, because a device that slips or rubs may need adjustment or replacement.

Report bleeding, pain, pressure sores, unusual bad-smelling discharge, difficulty urinating or difficulty passing stool after fitting. Seek urgent medical help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever with feeling very unwell, or inability to urinate.

Ask whether the uterus is the only organ affected, how the pessary will be monitored, whether you can remove it yourself, and what choices are available if symptoms or fitting problems persist.
