Does vaginal pessary fitting treat pelvic organ prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse happens when the tissues supporting the bladder, uterus, bowel or vaginal walls become less able to hold those organs in position. A pessary is placed inside the vagina to provide a physical support point. It may lessen heaviness, pressure or the feeling of tissue coming down during daily activities.

The device does not suit every anatomy or symptom pattern. Fit matters: it should stay in place without painful pressure and should allow comfortable urination and bowel movements. Some people use it for ongoing symptom control, while others use it during activity or while considering other care.

A pelvic health clinician can assess which organs are involved and discuss a trial fitting. Tell them about bladder, bowel, sexual and activity-related symptoms. Before leaving, make sure you understand insertion, removal, cleaning and follow-up. If the pessary is uncomfortable or repeatedly slips, arrange a refitting rather than continuing without review.

Contact your clinician for persistent discomfort, bleeding, sores, foul-smelling discharge, new difficulty urinating or difficulty opening your bowels. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever with marked illness, or inability to pass urine.

Ask which organs are prolapsing, what benefit a pessary is expected to provide, how its fit will be reviewed, and which other treatments could be considered if symptoms continue.
