Does vaginal pessary fitting help with vaginal bulge?

A pessary is a removable device placed inside the vagina. It provides structural support so a lowered vaginal wall or pelvic organ is less likely to press downward. The effect can be noticeable during standing, walking or other activities, but the amount of relief depends on the type and position of the prolapse and the device’s fit.

Fitting is usually an adjustment process. A clinician checks comfort, support and whether you can pass urine and move normally. A pessary should not cause persistent pain, bleeding, discharge with a bad smell or difficulty emptying the bladder.

Have the bulge assessed before choosing a device, since a vaginal bulge can have different causes. During fitting, describe pressure, slipping, rubbing and any change in bladder or bowel function. Follow the agreed plan for removal, cleaning and follow-up; do not force a device that feels painful or will not come out as instructed.

Contact a clinician promptly if the pessary causes new pain, bleeding, sores, foul-smelling discharge, fever or trouble passing urine or stool. Seek urgent care if you cannot urinate, have severe pelvic pain or develop heavy bleeding. A bulge that appears suddenly with marked pain also needs prompt assessment.
