Does vaginal oestrogen therapy help with pain during sex?

Lower oestrogen levels can make vaginal tissue drier, less flexible, and more easily irritated. Local oestrogen is placed in or around the vagina and may improve the tissue environment over time. Less friction can make penetration more comfortable, although improvement is gradual rather than immediate.

Pain during sex can also come from infection, pelvic floor muscle tightening, skin conditions, endometriosis, or emotional distress linked with pain. Vaginal oestrogen will not treat all of these causes, so persistent symptoms deserve an assessment.

Tell your clinician where the pain occurs, whether it starts with touch or deeper penetration, and whether dryness, itching, discharge, or bleeding is present. They can decide whether local oestrogen is appropriate and explain the product, placement, and schedule.

A water-based lubricant during sex and a regular vaginal moisturiser may reduce friction, but they serve different purposes. Avoid fragranced products and stop if treatment causes marked burning or irritation. Give the prescribed plan time to work and report inadequate relief rather than increasing use yourself.

Seek medical advice for pain that is new, severe, recurring, or accompanied by bleeding after sex, sores, unusual discharge, fever, or pelvic pain. Arrange prompt review for bleeding after menopause. Severe pelvic pain, fever, or feeling faint needs urgent assessment.
