Can vaginal dilator therapy help with pain during sex?

A dilator is a smooth device used with lubricant to introduce gentle, controlled stretching. Over time, a person may become more comfortable with touch or insertion and learn to relax the pelvic-floor muscles. This can be useful when pain is linked to muscle guarding, narrowing, scar tissue, or reduced tolerance after treatment.

Dilators do not treat every source of pain. Infection, skin disease, endometriosis, dryness, hormonal changes, or another pelvic condition may need a different approach. Pain that is sharp, deep, new, or associated with bleeding should be assessed rather than pushed through.

Ask a gynaecologist or pelvic-floor physiotherapist to help identify the cause and choose a size and schedule. Use plenty of suitable lubricant, begin only when relaxed, and stop if you feel sharp pain, bleeding, or burning. Slow breathing and releasing the pelvic floor can support the process. A partner does not need to take part unless you want them to, and consent remains central at every step.

Pause therapy and contact a clinician if pain is worsening, persists after use, or comes with bleeding, unusual discharge, fever, sores, or urinary problems. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, or fever with feeling very unwell. Assessment is also worthwhile when insertion is impossible or fear makes the exercises distressing.
