Can vaginal cancer cause bleeding after sex?

Vaginal cancer can make tissue fragile, so contact during sex may cause spotting or bleeding. Bleeding may come from the vagina or cervix, and irritation, infection, dryness, polyps, or trauma can also cause it. The appearance or amount of blood cannot identify the cause by itself. A clinician may ask when it happens, whether there is pain or discharge, and whether you have reached menopause before examining the vagina and cervix.

An examination may be followed by tests such as a swab, cervical assessment, or tissue sampling when the findings call for it. Finding another explanation is common, but persistent or repeated bleeding deserves follow-up.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecologist or primary-care clinician, especially if the bleeding has happened more than once. Record the timing, amount, colour, pain, discharge, contraception, and any recent procedures. Until you are assessed, avoid anything that clearly triggers bleeding and use a pad if you need to monitor it. Do not place products inside the vagina before an examination unless a clinician has advised them.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or does not settle, or if it occurs with faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, weakness, or shortness of breath. If you are pregnant, have recently given birth, or take medicine that affects clotting, contact a clinician promptly for tailored advice. A small episode still merits routine assessment when it is new, repeated, or unexplained.
