Do uterine fibroids cause trouble getting pregnant?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterine muscle. Some can change the shape of the uterine cavity, narrow a pathway near a fallopian tube, or affect how the uterine lining supports implantation. Others sit in the outer uterine wall and may have little effect on conception. Location, size, number, symptoms, and previous pregnancy history all matter.

Difficulty conceiving can also involve ovulation, sperm health, the fallopian tubes, age-related changes, or conditions unrelated to fibroids. A fertility assessment considers both partners when appropriate rather than assuming one explanation from a scan alone.

Tell your clinician about cycle regularity, bleeding, pelvic pressure, previous pregnancies, and how long you have been trying. Imaging can show where fibroids are located; additional fertility tests may assess ovulation, the tubes, or sperm. Discuss pregnancy goals before choosing treatment, because some procedures are designed to preserve the uterus and others are not suitable for every plan.

Arrange a fertility consultation if conception has not occurred after a sustained period of trying, or sooner if periods are very irregular, bleeding is heavy, pelvic pain is significant, or a known fibroid distorts the uterine cavity. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, fainting, fever, or heavy bleeding, especially with a possible pregnancy.

Ask whether your fibroid location could affect conception or implantation, which tests are appropriate, and whether observation is reasonable. Discuss benefits and drawbacks of medicines or procedures, recovery, pregnancy timing, and how treatment could affect future fertility.
