Does urinary tract infection cause urinary urgency?

An irritated bladder may tell you to pass urine urgently, even when it contains only a small amount. Urgency can occur with burning, frequent urination, pelvic pressure, cloudy urine, or blood. Some people also leak before reaching the toilet.

Caffeine, alcohol, constipation, pregnancy, overactive bladder, and some medicines can produce urgency without infection. The amount of urine, other symptoms, and how long the change has lasted help distinguish possible causes.

Contact a healthcare professional when urgency is new, persistent, or joined by burning, pelvic pain, fever, or blood. A urine sample may be needed. Drink a normal amount, avoid drinks that clearly trigger urgency, and do not hold urine for long periods while you are uncomfortable.

Do not start leftover antibiotics. Keep notes about drinks, timing, urine volume, pain, and leakage so the clinician can assess the pattern and choose appropriate treatment.

Seek urgent medical help if urgency occurs with fever and shaking chills, flank pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to pass urine. Arrange prompt assessment during pregnancy or with kidney disease, diabetes, or reduced immunity.

Ask whether infection is likely to explain the urgency, whether urine testing is needed, which drinks or medicines may contribute, and which symptoms require same-day care.
