Does urinary tract infection cause painful urination?

Pain may feel like burning, stinging, or soreness while urine passes. Bladder infection can also bring frequency, urgency, lower abdominal pressure, cloudy urine, or blood. Irritation of the urethra can cause similar discomfort.

Painful urination may also result from vaginal irritation, sexually transmitted infections, kidney stones, prostate problems, or concentrated urine. The pattern, discharge, sores, fever, and pain location help a clinician decide which tests are useful.

Arrange an assessment if painful urination persists, is new and unexplained, or appears with frequency, urgency, pelvic pain, or blood. A urine test may help identify infection. Drink fluids normally, avoid products that irritate the genital area, and do not use antibiotics left from an earlier illness.

Seek urgent care for painful urination with fever, chills, flank pain, vomiting, confusion, severe illness, or inability to pass urine. Prompt assessment is also sensible during pregnancy or when kidney disease or reduced immunity is present.
