Does urinary tract infection cause frequent urination?

Inflammation in the bladder can create repeated urges, even when only a small amount of urine is present. Frequent urination may come with burning, lower abdominal discomfort, cloudy urine, a strong smell, or blood in the urine. Waking repeatedly at night can also happen.

Frequent urination has other possible explanations, such as increased fluid intake, caffeine, pregnancy, diabetes, medicines, or bladder conditions. A new change is best interpreted alongside thirst, fever, pain, and the amount of urine passed.

Contact a healthcare professional if frequent urination is new, troublesome, or accompanied by burning, pelvic pain, fever, or blood. The clinician may ask for a urine sample and review medicines or other health conditions. Keep drinking a normal amount of water, and reduce caffeine if it clearly worsens the urgency or frequency.

Avoid taking antibiotics without advice, since the cause may not be an infection and the right treatment depends on the assessment. Note when symptoms began and whether each visit produces a small or large amount of urine.

Get urgent help if frequent urination occurs with fever and chills, flank pain, vomiting, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to pass urine. Seek prompt advice during pregnancy or if you have diabetes, kidney disease, or reduced immunity.
