Does urinary tract infection cause flank pain?

Flank pain is felt at the side of the back, beneath the ribs. A bladder infection may cause discomfort low in the abdomen, while pain higher in the flank can occur when infection travels towards the kidneys. Fever, chills, nausea, feeling unwell, or changes when passing urine can provide useful context.

Other problems, including kidney stones, muscle strain, or conditions affecting nearby organs, can also cause flank pain. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause, so a clinician may ask about its timing, side, severity, fever, and urinary changes and may test a urine sample.

Arrange medical advice if flank pain occurs with burning urine, frequent trips to the toilet, urgency, cloudy or bloody urine, fever, or chills. A clinician can decide whether urine testing and treatment are appropriate. Drink fluids normally unless you have been told to restrict them, and take only pain relief that is suitable for you.

Do not use leftover antibiotics or share someone else’s medicine. If treatment is prescribed, follow the instructions and contact the practice if symptoms do not start improving or return after treatment.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening flank pain, high fever or shaking chills, repeated vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. Pregnancy, a weakened immune system, a known kidney problem, or one working kidney lowers the threshold for prompt assessment.
