Does urinary tract infection cause cloudy urine?

Cloudiness can result from inflammatory cells, mucus, or other material in the urine during an infection. It may appear with burning, urgency, frequent urination, pressure in the lower abdomen, or an unusual smell. Urine can also look cloudy after limited fluid intake or because of harmless changes in its contents, so appearance does not confirm an infection. Blood in the urine, side pain, fever, or chills adds information that a clinician will want to know.

If cloudy urine continues or occurs with discomfort, arrange a clinical assessment. Write down when the change began and whether you have burning, urgency, pain, fever, or chills. Drink normally and avoid delaying urination, unless you have been given fluid restrictions. A urine test can help distinguish infection from other causes and guide treatment. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics, because the medicine may be unsuitable or may obscure the assessment.

Seek prompt care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, or feeling very unwell. Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine, become confused or faint, or notice heavy or persistent blood in the urine. Pregnant people, children, older adults, and people with kidney disease, diabetes, or reduced immunity should contact a clinician early rather than waiting for the urine change to settle.
