Does upper endoscopy treat barrett's oesophagus?

During an upper endoscopy, a flexible camera passes through the mouth to view the oesophagus and stomach. The clinician looks for changes in the lining and may take small biopsies. A laboratory examines these samples for abnormal cells, including dysplasia, which helps determine the next step.

If the lining contains concerning changes, an experienced specialist may offer endoscopic therapy such as removing a visible abnormal area or treating the surface. Acid-reducing medicine and reflux measures may also be part of care. The choice depends on biopsy findings, the appearance of the lining and overall health.

Ask the gastroenterology team why endoscopy is advised and whether biopsies are planned. After endoscopy, seek urgent help for severe chest or abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fever, fainting, or new breathing difficulty. Mild throat soreness can occur, but worsening symptoms should be discussed with the endoscopy service.
