Does tumour removal surgery treat vulvar cancer?

A surgeon may remove the cancer with a margin of healthy-looking tissue. The procedure can be limited to the vulva or may include groin lymph nodes when assessment of spread is needed. The location of the lesion matters because surgery aims to control cancer while preserving comfort, urinary function, sexual wellbeing and mobility where possible.

Some people need radiation or medicines before or after surgery, based on examination and pathology findings. Reconstruction may be discussed if removing the tumour leaves an area that needs repair. The care team can explain wound care and how healing may affect daily activities.

Arrange review with a gynaecologic oncology team. Take biopsy and imaging information, and mention pain, itching, bleeding or a changing skin area. Ask what tissue will be removed, whether groin nodes need assessment, and what support is available for wound care, movement and emotional or sexual health.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, inability to pass urine, severe pain, or rapidly increasing swelling. After surgery, report fever, spreading redness, foul-smelling drainage, wound separation, or trouble urinating to the treating team without delay.
