Does tumour removal surgery treat thymoma?

A thymoma develops in the thymus, which sits in the chest behind the breastbone. Imaging helps show whether the tumour is contained and how close it is to the heart, lungs, major blood vessels and other tissues. The surgeon may remove the thymus and tumour together, aiming to leave no visible tumour while protecting nearby structures.

If the tumour extends into neighbouring tissue, complete removal may be more complex. Radiation can be considered after surgery in selected situations. Some people are monitored with follow-up scans, while medicines or other treatment may be discussed when surgery is not suitable or the tumour has spread.

Ask a thoracic oncology team to review your scans and tissue diagnosis. Discuss whether the operation is intended to remove the whole thymus and tumour, how the chest incision will be made, and what recovery may involve. Tell the team about muscle weakness, drooping eyelids or double vision, because thymoma can occur alongside autoimmune conditions such as myasthenia gravis.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or sudden worsening muscle weakness. After an operation, promptly report fever, increasing wound redness, new shortness of breath, or difficulty managing pain.
