Does tumour removal surgery treat spinal cord compression?

A tumour can press on the spinal cord or the nerves leaving the spine, affecting movement, sensation and bladder or bowel control. Surgery may remove pressure, stabilise a weakened part of the spine or obtain tissue for diagnosis. The choice depends on the level of compression, spinal stability, tumour type, other areas involved and your strength for an operation. Steroids, radiotherapy or cancer medicines may also form part of the plan.

Tell the oncology or emergency team immediately about new back pain with weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or changes in bladder or bowel control. Do not delay assessment while waiting for routine appointments. The team may arrange urgent imaging and ask you to limit movement until the spine is assessed. If surgery is advised, ask about stabilisation, expected mobility, pain relief and rehabilitation.

Go to emergency care now for new or worsening weakness, inability to walk, numbness spreading around the body or legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain with known or suspected cancer. These symptoms can worsen quickly and need same-day assessment.
