Does tumour removal surgery treat soft tissue sarcoma?

Soft tissue sarcomas can arise in muscle, fat, connective tissue or around organs. Surgeons aim to remove the mass with a rim of healthy-looking tissue while protecting important nerves, blood vessels and organs. The operation may be straightforward in one body region and complex in another. A biopsy result and scans help define the tumour type, its boundaries and whether it has spread. Removing a lump without proper planning can make later treatment harder, so specialist assessment matters.

Ask whether your case will be reviewed by a sarcoma team and whether a planned biopsy is needed before surgery. Depending on the tumour, radiotherapy or drug treatment may be considered before or after the operation. Discuss reconstruction, drains, movement, pain control and rehabilitation if muscle or tissue must be removed. Keep the follow-up schedule because examinations and scans can identify changes that need attention.

Arrange assessment for a lump that is deep, enlarging, firm or persistent, especially if it limits movement or causes pain. After surgery, contact your team urgently for sudden limb swelling, loss of movement or sensation, fever, increasing redness, wound leakage, chest pain or difficulty breathing.
