Does tumour removal surgery treat penile cancer?

Penile cancer can involve the skin, foreskin, glans or deeper penile tissue. A specialist examines the lesion and may arrange a biopsy to identify the cancer type and features. For a small or superficial tumour, local removal or another tissue-preserving approach may be possible. A larger or deeper tumour can require removal of more tissue, and nearby groin lymph nodes may also need assessment or treatment.

The aim is to control the cancer while considering urination, sexual function, appearance and healing. The plan may include other treatments before or after surgery, depending on the examination and pathology. A new lesion or a change in an existing one should be assessed rather than treated at home.

Arrange an appointment with a clinician for a persistent sore, growth, colour change, bleeding or discharge on the penis. Avoid applying unprescribed creams or attempting to remove tissue. Take notes about when the change began and whether it affects urination. At the consultation, ask how a biopsy would be performed and which options could protect function while achieving safe cancer removal.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a penile lesion that enlarges, bleeds, ulcerates, smells unusual, causes persistent pain or is linked with a groin lump. Urgent care is needed for inability to pass urine, uncontrolled bleeding or severe swelling. These symptoms need examination and do not establish the diagnosis on their own.

Ask where the cancer is located, what the biopsy shows, how much tissue may need removal, and whether lymph-node assessment or another treatment is recommended. Ask about wound care, urination, sexual function, reconstruction and the follow-up schedule.
