Does tumour removal surgery treat voice box cancer?

The voice box, or larynx, helps you breathe, speak and protect the airway when swallowing. Surgery may remove the tumour while preserving as much laryngeal function as possible. Depending on the cancer, this can involve removing a small area, part of the larynx or the whole larynx. A larger operation may change the way you breathe and speak, so the team weighs cancer control against these functions.

Treatment may also include radiotherapy, chemotherapy or another approach before or after surgery. The recommendation is based on examination, imaging and tissue results rather than on the name of the operation alone.

Arrange an assessment with an ear, nose and throat specialist and an oncology team. Take any scan reports, biopsy results and a list of medicines. Ask whether the tumour can be removed while preserving the larynx, what changes to voice or swallowing are expected, and whether a speech and swallowing specialist should meet you before treatment.

If surgery is recommended, ask about preparation, airway care, nutrition and rehabilitation. A written plan can explain whether further treatment is needed and how follow-up will check healing and cancer control.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening breathing difficulty, noisy breathing at rest, inability to swallow saliva, choking or coughing blood. New confusion, bluish lips or rapidly increasing swelling around the neck also need emergency attention. Do not wait for a routine appointment when the airway may be narrowing.

Where is the tumour, and has it reached the vocal cords or nearby structures? What operation are you proposing, and what will it mean for breathing, voice and swallowing?
