Does tumour removal surgery treat ewing sarcoma?

Ewing sarcoma can start in bone or soft tissue and may have cells beyond the visible mass. Surgery is therefore planned with the full treatment sequence in mind. Medication may be given before surgery to treat microscopic disease and help assess how the tumour responds. The operation then removes the visible tumour when this can be done while protecting nearby nerves, blood vessels and useful function.

The removed tissue is examined to confirm the diagnosis and assess the treatment response. Imaging of the original site and other areas helps the team decide whether local surgery, radiotherapy, medication, or a combination is appropriate.
