Does tumour removal surgery treat chondrosarcoma?

Chondrosarcoma begins in cartilage-forming cells and often develops in a bone or near a joint. Surgery aims to remove the tumour with a surrounding margin of healthy tissue while preserving as much function as possible. The operation may involve removing part of a bone, rebuilding the area, or replacing a joint. The surgical approach changes when the tumour lies close to nerves, blood vessels or vital organs.

A pathology report after surgery helps confirm the tumour type, grade and whether the edges of the removed tissue are clear. Those findings, scans and your general health guide whether further treatment or monitoring is needed.

Ask for review by a sarcoma team before deciding on an operation. Bring scan reports and biopsy results, and ask how the proposed procedure could affect movement, strength and recovery. Contact your clinical team promptly for new or worsening pain, swelling, reduced movement or a change in the shape of a limb or other affected area.
