Does tumour removal surgery treat appendix cancer?

Appendix cancers are not all alike. Some grow slowly and release mucus, while others behave more aggressively. The cancer may be found after an appendix operation, or it may be discovered after cells or mucus have moved into the abdominal cavity. Surgeons use scans, pathology and the abdominal pattern of disease to plan the extent of treatment.

A limited operation may be enough for a small cancer confined to the appendix. More extensive disease can require removal of affected abdominal lining, mucus or involved organs, sometimes as part of specialist surgery. The aim may be to remove visible disease and reduce the chance of further growth, but surgery may be combined with other oncology care.

Request review by a team experienced in appendix and abdominal cancers. Ask for the pathology name, whether the abdominal lining is involved and what the proposed operation includes. Discuss nutrition, recovery, bowel changes and whether additional treatment is planned. Bring previous operation notes and scan reports so the team can assess the full picture.

Seek urgent care for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, fainting or inability to pass stool or gas. Following surgery, report fever, worsening wound redness, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting or new shortness of breath without delay.
