Does tumour ablation treat liver cancer?

During ablation, a specialist places a probe into or near the liver tumour using imaging guidance. Heat or cold damages the targeted tumour cells. The approach can be considered when a tumour is limited in number and position, or when an operation is not the right fit.

The liver's reserve, cirrhosis or scarring, blood vessels, bile ducts, and nearby organs all affect safety and suitability. The team may combine local treatment with surgery, medicines, radiation, or another liver-directed procedure. Ablation treats the targeted area; it does not automatically address cancer elsewhere.

Ask your cancer team to review the scan findings, liver-function tests, tumour type, and the pattern of disease. Request a clear explanation of the intended goal: controlling a liver tumour, easing symptoms, or supporting a wider treatment plan.

Share your medicines, especially blood thinners, and mention previous liver procedures, bleeding problems, allergies, and other illnesses. Ask how you should prepare and how follow-up imaging will assess the treated area.

Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fainting, confusion, fever with chills, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bleeding, black stools, or a rapidly swollen abdomen. These symptoms need prompt review, particularly after a liver procedure.

Ask whether ablation can reach the tumour safely, how liver function affects the plan, what other treatments may be needed, and which symptoms after treatment require immediate contact.
