Does triple-negative breast cancer cause breast lump?

Triple-negative breast cancer does not have receptors for oestrogen, progesterone, or HER2, which affects how clinicians classify and treat it. A lump may be felt in the breast or underarm, but its texture and position cannot identify the cancer subtype. Cysts, fibroadenoma, infection, hormonal changes, and other benign breast conditions can also cause a lump. Assessment usually combines a clinical examination with imaging, and a biopsy may be needed to determine the tissue diagnosis.

Book an appointment for any new breast lump, especially if it remains after a menstrual cycle or is changing. Note when you first noticed it, whether it is painful, and whether there are nipple or skin changes. A clinician may arrange breast imaging suited to your age and findings. Do not keep checking the area repeatedly, as this can make it sore and make changes harder to judge.

Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly enlarging lump, skin dimpling, new nipple inversion, bloody nipple discharge, persistent one-sided swelling, or a lump in the armpit. Fever, redness, warmth, and severe tenderness may indicate an infection and also need medical attention. Urgent symptoms should be assessed based on the change itself, not on assumptions about its diagnosis.
