Does trichomoniasis cause vaginal odour?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. It may alter vaginal discharge, which can have an unusual or unpleasant smell. Discharge may also look different from usual, and some people notice itching, burning, soreness, or discomfort when urinating or having sex. Others have no obvious symptoms. Bacterial vaginosis, some other infections, retained products, or changes in the vaginal environment can also affect odour, so the symptom does not establish a diagnosis.

Arrange a sexual-health or primary-care assessment if the odour is new, persistent, or accompanied by discharge, irritation, or urinary discomfort. Testing can use a sample from the vagina or urine, depending on the service. Avoid douching because it can disturb the vaginal environment and make symptoms harder to assess. Until you have advice and, if needed, treatment, consider avoiding sex or using condoms. If trichomoniasis is confirmed, partners may need assessment and treatment to reduce reinfection.

Seek prompt medical care for pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, bleeding after sex, or feeling acutely unwell with vaginal symptoms. Pregnancy, recent sexual exposure, or symptoms that are worsening also warrant timely advice. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics, since the correct medicine depends on the cause and some infections require partner management.

Ask which tests can distinguish trichomoniasis from bacterial vaginosis or other infections, whether you should avoid sex while waiting, and whether current or recent partners need testing. You can also ask what changes should prompt a follow-up visit.
