Does trichomoniasis cause vaginal discharge?

Trichomoniasis is an infection caused by a parasite and can affect the vagina and cervix. Discharge may be more noticeable than usual and can look yellowish or greenish, sometimes with an unpleasant smell or a frothy texture. Some people have mild symptoms or no symptoms, so appearance by itself is not enough for diagnosis.

Other infections and changes in the vaginal environment can also cause discharge. A clinician may take a vaginal swab or use another test to identify the cause and choose treatment. Avoid douching because it can irritate tissue and make symptoms harder to assess.

Arrange sexual-health or gynaecology testing if discharge is new, changes, or follows sex with a new partner. Avoid sex until you have received advice, and tell recent partners if testing confirms trichomoniasis so they can obtain assessment. Complete treatment exactly as prescribed and ask whether repeat testing is needed.

Seek prompt medical care for discharge with lower abdominal pain, fever, pain during sex, bleeding after sex, or burning when urinating. Get urgent help for severe pelvic pain, fainting or feeling acutely unwell.

Ask which tests are recommended, whether other infections should be checked, when it is safe to have sex, and how partners should be managed. Mention pregnancy or a possibility of pregnancy before treatment is chosen.
