Short answer

A travel health consultation can assess traveller's diarrhoea, guide rehydration and advise whether treatment or testing is needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this means

Traveller's diarrhoea often starts during or soon after a trip and may involve loose stools, cramps, nausea or vomiting. A consultation does not mean every episode needs antibiotics. The clinician considers how long symptoms have lasted, their severity, recent destinations, food and water exposures, existing health conditions and medicines. The plan may focus on replacing fluids and salts, choosing suitable food, and monitoring recovery. If symptoms are persistent, severe or unusual, the clinician may arrange tests or prescribe treatment appropriate to the suspected cause.

What to do now

Take frequent small sips of safe fluids; an oral rehydration solution can replace water and salts more effectively than plain water when losses are substantial. Eat light foods as tolerated and avoid alcohol. Wash hands carefully after using the bathroom and before handling food. Do not use leftover antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicines without checking that they are suitable, particularly if there is blood in the stool or a high temperature. Arrange a travel health consultation if symptoms are not settling, you are unsure which medicines are safe, or you have other medical needs.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent medical help for signs of significant dehydration, such as faintness, confusion, very little urine or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also needed for blood or black stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, marked weakness or a high fever. Infants, older adults, pregnant people and those with weakened immunity can become unwell more quickly and should seek advice early. After travel, tell the clinician where you went and when symptoms began.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which fluids and foods are most suitable, whether you need testing, which symptom medicines fit your health history, and what changes should prompt a return visit. Mention recent travel, untreated water, unusual foods, antibiotics, pregnancy and any long-term condition.

Questions people ask

Will I always need antibiotics?

No. Many episodes are managed with fluids, rest and symptom guidance; a clinician decides whether antibiotics are appropriate.

Can I prevent spreading diarrhoea?

Yes. Handwashing, separate towels and careful food handling reduce the chance of passing infection to others.
