Does travel health consultation treat malaria?

Malaria is an infection transmitted by certain mosquitoes in some travel destinations. Before travel, a clinician assesses your destination, season, route, accommodation, length of stay, and health history. They can recommend mosquito-bite precautions and discuss preventive medicine when suitable. A consultation may also give you a written action plan, but prevention advice is not a substitute for testing and treatment if illness occurs.

Use an effective insect repellent, wear covering clothing when practical, and sleep behind intact screens or under a suitable mosquito net. Take prescribed preventive medicine exactly as directed and keep a record of your destination and travel dates. During travel and after returning, seek medical advice promptly for fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, or marked tiredness, and mention your travel history.

Fever after travel to a malaria area warrants urgent medical advice, even if it appears mild or comes and goes. Go to emergency care for confusion, breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Do not wait for a routine travel appointment or assume that preventive medicine rules malaria out.
