Does tranexamic acid treat uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the muscle of the uterus. Depending on their size and position, they can contribute to heavy or prolonged periods, cramping, pressure or fertility concerns. Tranexamic acid works during bleeding by slowing clot breakdown, which can reduce blood loss for that episode.

Because it does not act on the fibroid itself, it will not relieve every fibroid-related symptom. Continued heavy bleeding may cause iron deficiency or anaemia and deserves review even when the tablets help for a while.
