Does total knee replacement treat knee osteoarthritis?

Knee osteoarthritis changes the joint surfaces and can cause pain, stiffness, reduced bending, and difficulty with walking or stairs. Total knee replacement removes the most damaged contacting surfaces and places manufactured components to create a new gliding joint. It treats the arthritic knee joint rather than reversing osteoarthritis elsewhere in the body.

The presence of osteoarthritis does not by itself require replacement. Clinicians consider symptom severity, examination, imaging, daily limitations, previous treatment, and overall health. Recovery also depends on muscle strength, movement practice, and participation in rehabilitation.

Seek an orthopaedic review if knee pain or stiffness is interfering with sleep, work, walking, stairs, or personal care. Bring a list of treatments tried and explain which activities have become difficult. Discuss physiotherapy, activity modification, walking aids, and medicines before surgery. If replacement is recommended, ask about preparation, home support, exercises, wound care, and the gradual return to activities.

Seek urgent care after a major injury if the knee is deformed or cannot bear weight. Prompt assessment is also needed for a hot, swollen knee with fever. After surgery, contact the team about increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, sudden worsening pain, calf swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness.
