Does total hip replacement treat hip osteoarthritis?

Hip osteoarthritis damages the smooth surfaces that let the ball and socket glide. A total hip replacement removes the damaged femoral head and reshapes the socket, then places manufactured components to create a new joint surface. This addresses the arthritic joint itself; it does not treat every possible cause of pain around the hip. People may still need time, exercises, and support while strength and walking confidence return.

The decision depends on symptoms, examination findings, imaging, general health, and how much daily life is restricted. A diagnosis alone does not automatically mean surgery is needed.

Arrange an assessment if hip pain limits walking, sleep, dressing, stairs, or other regular activities. Before surgery, a clinician may review activity changes, physiotherapy, walking aids, and suitable medicines. If replacement is discussed, ask how the operation would address your joint, what rehabilitation involves, and which movements need temporary modification. Prepare your home for safer walking and follow the surgical team’s instructions about wound care, exercises, and follow-up.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe hip pain after a fall, inability to put weight on the leg, a visibly shortened or twisted limb, fever with a hot swollen joint, or new weakness or numbness. After surgery, promptly report increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, calf swelling, chest pain, or unexpected breathlessness.
