Does topical steroid treatment treat lichen sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosus can make vulval or anal skin itchy, sore, fragile or lighter in colour. It may cause small cracks and changes in the shape of the vulval skin. A prescribed steroid reduces the inflammation driving these symptoms and can help protect the skin from ongoing injury.

Treatment controls the condition rather than changing the diagnosis. Symptoms may improve before the skin looks normal, and some changes may remain. Regular reviews help check whether the inflammation is controlled and whether any new area needs closer examination.

Use the prescribed ointment on the affected external skin in the amount and pattern your clinician explains. Do not stop, restart or increase it based only on a flare without checking your plan. Avoid scented washes, bubble bath, deodorants and vigorous rubbing; a bland emollient can reduce dryness and friction.

Tell your clinician about pregnancy, other medicines, recurrent thrush-like symptoms or treatment irritation. Keeping a simple note of itching, soreness, cracks and bleeding can make follow-up more useful.

Contact a clinician promptly for a sore, ulcer, lump, unexplained bleeding, thickened area or pain that does not settle. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, fever, rapidly worsening pain or difficulty passing urine. These findings do not confirm a serious cause, but they should not be assessed through symptoms alone.
