Does hydroquinone treatment treat perioral hyperpigmentation?

Perioral hyperpigmentation is darkening around the mouth. It can follow irritation, inflammation, acne, contact reactions, or other triggers. Hydroquinone reduces pigment production in treated skin, so it may gradually soften colour when excess melanin is the main issue.

The skin around the mouth is exposed to saliva, toothpaste, cosmetics, shaving, and frequent movement. These can contribute to irritation or make treatment harder to tolerate. If the underlying trigger continues, new darkening may develop even while an older mark fades.

Ask a dermatologist to examine the pattern and check for an active rash, scaling, or product reaction before using hydroquinone. If it is recommended, apply a small amount only to the intended skin and keep it off the lips, inside the mouth, nostrils, and cracked areas. Follow the prescribed schedule rather than increasing applications.

Use a bland cleanser and moisturiser, avoid rubbing or picking the area, and protect the face from daylight with broad-spectrum sunscreen. Stop other potentially irritating products until you know which routine your skin can tolerate.

Get medical advice if the area becomes very sore, swollen, blistered, or persistently inflamed, or if the darkening spreads with a rash. A changing, bleeding, crusted, or one-sided lesion should be examined rather than treated as ordinary pigmentation.

Ask what triggered the colour change, whether toothpaste or cosmetics could be contributing, exactly where to apply the cream, and how to respond to stinging. Discuss alternatives if the skin is sensitive or the pigmentation does not improve.
