Does topical corticosteroids treat seborrheic dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis can cause flaky or greasy scale, redness, and itch on the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, chest, or other oilier areas. A topical corticosteroid suppresses inflammation, so it may bring quick relief during a flare. It does not remove the tendency to relapse, and it may not be the only treatment needed for scalp scale.

Because the face, folds, and ears have delicate skin, repeated or prolonged steroid use can lead to thinning, visible vessels, or other changes. A similar-looking rash may instead be contact dermatitis, psoriasis, infection, or another condition. A clinician can match treatment to the site and appearance.

Wash gently, avoid scratching, and use a fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin feels dry or tight. If a clinician prescribes a corticosteroid, apply a thin layer only to the affected areas and follow the planned schedule. Do not keep using it whenever flakes return without checking whether a different or additional treatment is needed.

For scalp symptoms, follow the washing and contact-time instructions for any recommended medicated cleanser or treatment. Note which areas flare and whether symptoms follow a new cosmetic, hair product, or skin product. A routine review is useful when episodes are frequent, difficult to control, or extending beyond the usual sites.

Seek prompt medical care for painful swelling, pus, spreading warmth, marked crusting, fever, or involvement of the eyes. Arrange assessment for sudden hair loss, thick plaques that extend beyond the hairline, or a rash that worsens with treatment, since these signs can point to infection, psoriasis, allergy, or another diagnosis.

Ask whether the rash is seborrheic dermatitis, which areas may receive a corticosteroid, and how often it can be used safely. Ask what treatment should help control scale between flares, how to protect facial skin, and which changes mean the diagnosis should be revisited.
