Does topical corticosteroids treat scalp psoriasis?

Scalp psoriasis can create plaques beneath the hairline, behind the ears, or across the scalp, with scale that may cling to the hair. A corticosteroid reduces local inflammation and can make itch and scaling easier to manage. It does not remove the tendency to develop psoriasis, so symptoms can return after a course ends.

Lotions, solutions, foams, gels, and shampoos may spread through hair more easily than thick creams. The scalp and hairline also sit close to the face, where prolonged or overly strong steroid use can cause unwanted skin changes. Flaking alone is not enough to confirm psoriasis because seborrheic dermatitis and other scalp conditions can look similar.

Part the hair, place the prescribed product on the scalp skin rather than along the hair shafts, and wash your hands afterwards. Follow any instructions about leaving a medicated preparation on before washing. Loosen scale gently only if advised; picking can injure the skin and worsen irritation.

Keep follow-up if the scalp remains thick, bleeds, becomes sore, or interferes with sleep. Tell the clinician about plaques outside the scalp, nail changes, or joint stiffness, since these details can alter the overall psoriasis plan. Do not use a facial steroid on the scalp or a scalp product near the eyes unless instructed.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness with fever, marked tenderness, pus, extensive cracking, or sudden widespread blistering. Arrange review for persistent hair shedding, painful plaques, eye-area involvement, or symptoms that do not improve with correct application, because another scalp problem or a broader psoriasis treatment plan may need consideration.
