Do topical corticosteroids treat nickel allergy?

Nickel allergy is a delayed skin reaction after contact with nickel-containing items. The rash may be itchy, red, swollen, scaly, or blistered where contact occurred, although its borders can extend beyond the exact contact area. A corticosteroid can reduce the inflammation during a flare, but it does not remove the sensitivity to nickel. Continued contact with jewellery, watches, fasteners, tools, or other sources can keep the reaction active.

Apply the prescribed corticosteroid as directed and avoid the suspected item until the skin settles. Remove jewellery and accessories that touch the area, and consider patch testing if the trigger is uncertain or reactions keep recurring. Choose alternatives labelled nickel-free by a clinician or pharmacist where appropriate, and protect hands from occupational contact with suitable gloves. Use a bland moisturiser after washing, avoid scratching, and do not apply steroid to broken or infected skin unless instructed.

Seek medical review if the rash spreads despite avoiding the suspected item, becomes painful, oozes, crusts, or returns repeatedly. A clinician can check for infection or another form of dermatitis and may recommend patch testing. Get urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly worsening reaction.
