Does topical corticosteroids treat lichen sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosus can make vulval skin pale, fragile, itchy, sore, or prone to splitting. A corticosteroid ointment reduces the local inflammatory reaction and can help the skin recover. It controls the condition rather than removing the tendency for it to return, so maintenance treatment or periodic review may be discussed.

The medicine should be applied to the affected external skin as instructed. Using too little may leave inflammation active, while applying it to the wrong area or using it more often than advised can cause problems. The vagina is not the same as the vulva, so location matters.

Ask a clinician to confirm the diagnosis and show you exactly where and how much ointment to apply. Use gentle, fragrance-free washing, avoid rubbing and scented products, and use a bland moisturising barrier if advised. Keep follow-up appointments even when itching settles, because examination checks healing and any persistent changes.

Seek medical review for a sore, lump, ulcer, bleeding area, thickened patch, or wound that does not heal. Contact the clinic if symptoms worsen, the skin becomes infected-looking, or treatment causes marked irritation. New persistent changes deserve examination rather than repeated self-treatment.
